About Us

The Open Media Globe

The Beginning
In 2005, the City of Denver withdrew the operating support they had provided public access TV. This decision pushed the Denver community to innovate and devise a new user-driven model that could function without the general operating support once provided.  As one of Denver’s leading nonprofit media education and production companies, Deproduction began transforming the existing CTC into Denver Open Media, a new kind of TV station, leveraging a small staff to enable the community to participate in more powerful and meaningful ways than ever before.

A Model for Open Media
Deproduction was the recipient of a Knight News Challenge award in 2008.  At the core of this grant is the collection and implementation of a set of open-source tools in Drupal, designed for Public Access TV stations and Community Technology Centers.

Throughout 2008, Deproduction continued updating and developing the various Drupal modules used in the automated, user-driven operation of Denver Open Media.  In early 2009, Deproduction released the beta version of these tools as a suite of modules based and began implementing these tools at Denver Open Media and the initial group of 6 development partners.

With these tools released and in use at several locations, the Open Media Project's goal for a nation-wide user-driven network is becoming a reality.
